Important Announcement re: Food for the Hungry

Important Announcement re: Food for the Hungry

Starting November 5, the Knox County Democratic Party office will act as a collection point for this year’s Food for the Hungry drive.

Why? Many people in Knox County struggle with food scarcity issues. And the current government shutdown has threatened to make a very bad situation even worse.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits had been set to expire tomorrow, November 1. And even though emergency funds had been set aside to continue SNAP benefits in the case of a government shutdown, the Trump Administration refused to make those funds available. This went to court, and as of this writing, two federal judges have ordered the Trump Administration to pay SNAP benefits during the shutdown. That’s good news, but we still worry.

Many people are still at risk of going hungry. To help the community in need, the Knox County Democratic Party will be collecting for the Food for the Hungry drive this year, and we hope you will stop by with your donation:

Some details on your donations:

  • Please check your food donations to ensure the food has not expired and is in a non-breakable container (no glass).

  • Review Food for the Hungry’s recommendations on the most-needed items.

  • We also can take monetary donations (cash, or checks made out to “Food for the Hungry”).

  • If you have a large amount of food to donate and need help getting it from your car to the office, stop by to ask a volunteer from the office to help you. We have a hand truck that can be very helpful.

  • The alleyway next to our office can be used for a very quick stop (5 minutes or less) to drop off food. Please be considerate of anyone else needing to park there temporarily.

If you can volunteer to help us with the food collection, please fill out this form. There are a couple of time slots where we need some backup assistance.

Help us to support our community and those in need of food assistance by stopping by our office at one of the times listed above to donate whatever you can. Thank you very much.
