May 7, 2021, The Mount Vernon City Council, historians, and community members dedicated an Ohio Historical Marker on our Mount Vernon Public Square to commemorate Dr. Ellamae Simmons. Dr. Simmons was a native of Knox County, graduating in 1936 from Mount Vernon High School to become a nurse in WWII and later to earn her MD degree from OSU while being the first African American medical student to reside in campus housing.
